Closed Captions – Dialogue that can be turned off or on to display dialogue and environmental sounds on a television screen (usually via a built-in decoder).

Deaf – A prelingually Deaf person with sign language as his/her primary language.

HA – Hearing Aid.

HOH – hard of hearing.

Hearing Aid – Small, battery powered amplifier worn in or on the ear.  Also known as a Personal Communication Assistant.  Uncouth persons use the term “hearing aid” as a derogatory comment, such as, “You hearing aid!”

Open Captions – Dialogue and environmental sounds displayed on a television or movie screen (cannot be turned off).

Subtitles – Usually a translation of foreign dialogue displayed on a television or movie screen (cannot be turned off).  Environmental sounds are not noted, as subtitles are for hearing people.
